White powdery solid with a pungent odor (formaldehyde-like smell). A flammable solid, linear polymer of formaldehyde, no fixed melting point. Decomposes upon heating, releasing toxic formaldehyde gas. Melting range: 120–170°C, flash point: 70°C, ignition temperature: 300°C, explosive limits: 7.0–73.0%. Soluble in water (releasing formaldehyde), slowly dissolves in cold water, soluble in sodium hydroxide and carbonate solutions, insoluble in alcohols and ethers.
Paraformaldehyde replaces industrial formaldehyde solutions in synthesizing pesticides, resins, coatings, and fumigation disinfectants. It reduces dehydration energy consumption and wastewater treatment demands, serving as an eco-friendly raw material. Its high formaldehyde content and solid form make it ideal for chemical synthesis (e.g., pharmaceuticals, organic chemicals) requiring anhydrous formaldehyde. Also used as a disinfectant, sterilizer, fumigant, herbicide, resin, and artificial ivory.
