Epichlorohydrin is an organochlorine compound and an epoxide. It is a colorless liquid with a pungent odor similar to garlic. It is insoluble in water but miscible with most polar organic solvents. Epichlorohydrin is highly reactive and is used in the production of glycerol, plastics, and synthetic rubber. Upon contact with water, epichlorohydrin hydrolyzes to form 3-MCPD (3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol), a carcinogenic substance found in food products.
